Hi,
You can use your external camera in Quicktime.
Plug your camera into your mac.
Start Quicktime
Choose File - New Movie Recording
Once that window opens your mac will automatically choose your internal isight camera.
Toward the right side of the control bar that comes up is a small triangle pointing downward.
Click on that triangle and a menu will come up giving you the option of what camera to use along with where you want the sound to be recorded from as well as quality and the option to save it where you want.
Simply change your settings and you are good to go.
I hope this helps you.

Is the Camera in Use By Another App? One thing that’s quite easy to forget is that the camera can. From the developer: 'The IOXperts USB WebCam Driver for Mac OS X gives Mac users full-speed access to more than 30 USB video cameras, either sold only for the PC or not supported by their vendors.
A lot has to do with the specific camera you are using. Some come with their own software that you may choose to use. Some have software that is not Mac compatible (Sony). You may choose to have all photos downloaded to iPhoto (or Aperture). Some cameras have RAW formats that you cannot use in iPhoto (or Aperture), others do.
Essentially take the USB connector that comes with the camera, plug it into the MBP, turn the camera on and you should be ready to go. Select your download site and start editing. It also helps if you read the specifications of the particular camera in regards to Mac compatibility and the user manual.
